TERRONE & Co. home compostable capsule

With the rise of the popularity and convenience of using capsule machines it’s important that we make ourselves aware about the effect on the environment disposing hundreds of coffees worth of plastic capsules a month has; most of which end up in landfill or in our oceans. Hundreds of home users and restaurants are turning to capsule machines due to convenience, using less space than traditional machines and also at majorly lower cost. Despite the restrictions of using a capsule machine we fully support the move from traditional espresso to a pod solution. We’ve given some of our clients solutions that really work within their business and have first eye experience when seeing a pod solution being the best option for restaurants who want specialty coffee but don’t have baristas or space to have a whole espresso solution.

In January last year, our Head Roaster travelled to Guatemala to visit a number of small coffee communities and cooperatives. One of them is the Cooperative Nueva Esperanza Del Bosque, which is located in the municipality of Santa Cruz Naranjo in the Santa Rosa department of Guatemala. We were struck by the incredible care and dedication of the workers and owners, who are committed not only to producing some of the world’s best coffee, but also to creating a safe and healthy environment for the people who live in the surrounding area.

They take so much pride in their work, and we wanted to reward that with a fair price. We tried a number of delicious coffees from the collective, but one that particularly stood out was their honey-processed lot. We decided to buy the entire lot, on the spot, directly from the cooperative. We then chose to take this great high scoring coffee and put it in these home-compostable pods making it the most ethical way to enjoy specialty coffee in nespresso compatible pods. The cardboard ring seal is made 100% from cellulose and is biodegradable. The biocapsule has a renewable raw materials content of at least 62%. The technical additives are also biodegradable and environmentally friendly. The capsule is also certified as OK COMPOST by TÜV Austria/ Vincotte.

The perfect space limited low cost coffee solution..

Pastaio is the perfect example of a restaurant looking for a low maintenance, low cost coffee solution whilst still being passionate about great tasting specialty coffee. They use our home-compostable pods accompanied by two Nespresso machines. This set-up takes up less than 1 feet squared (not including coffee cups or other glassware) therefore this is the best option for a restaurant with low counter space. The machines need no installation but simply plugging them into a socket and are incredibly easy to use and can be operated by anyone which means no barista’s are required. For the home user these pods are ideal since the machines are a fraction of the cost of most home espresso machines.
